Squerryes Wine Awarded Gold and Silver at the International Wine Challenge 2024 Awards

Squerryes in Westerham is celebrating being awarded gold and silver medals in this year’s International Wine Challenge Awards, reflecting the quality of the fruit grown on the North Downs and the dedication shown by the winemaking team to create the very finest English sparkling wine.

The wine awarded gold is Squerryes Late Disgorged 2013 Brut which benefits from Squerryes expertise in making wine with a greater depth of flavour from extensive ageing on both the lees and on the cork. The IWC’s international panel of judges’ comments were: “Good nose of lime/peach/lemon bread crust. Some nice lanolin notes. Fresh, clean finish.”

Squerryes Blanc de Blancs 2015 was awarded a silver medal.  The 2015 vintage, made solely from chardonnay grapes, benefits from 69 months of lees ageing and the judges’ comments were: “More open, aromatic, attractive peach, lemon curd notes, structure, fresh butter, chalky elevated acidity. Very balanced and elegant.”

Squerryes Brut 2019 also received a silver medal.  The 2019 Brut, released only last year, attracting comments from the judges: “Nice mousse, attractive, biscuit nose followed by crispy apple. Great acidity. Fresh and bright on the palate. Still very youthful.”

Medals were awarded to 38 winemaking countries, with English winemakers receiving 13 gold, 54 silver and 58 bronze, taking our country up to 9th place this year, from 10th in 2023.

Henry Warde, owner of the Squerryes Estate said: ‘As our wines go from strength to strength, it’s wonderful to have the recognition from our peers and industry experts. These latest three awards from the IWC are particularly pleasing as our wines were rigorously judged against strong competition, and in our opinion, are just improving with age.

As we are coming to the end of these vintages, the only place to enjoy them all now is in the restaurant. I highly recommend ordering a tasting flight to sample them all against the backdrop of the vineyard at Squerryes.’
